Fox Interactive acquires Photobucket, Flektor Comments

ZDNet Blogs by Larry Dignan - May 30, '07 9:22am
Looks like MySpace's parent is gobbling up key contributors to its service. Fox Interactive Media just announced that it will acquire Photobucket and Flektor. Photobucket, which recently had a very public spat with MySpace, is a photo and video sharing service. The message from Fox: If at first you don't  agree , buy it. The acquisition had been previously reported. Flektor takes photos and videos to create mashups, galleries and the like. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but Fox is taking an approach that's becoming quite common--open up your APIs and create developer networks and then acquire the best ones. Salesforce.com does it and rest assured Facebook will be doing something similar in the future. Photobucket and Flektor...

Google Web Toolkit 1.4: "Have to see it to believe it" Comments

ZDNet Blogs by Ed Burnette - May 30, '07 9:08am
Google just released the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) 1.4 Release Candidate, a major upgrade to the company's open-source framework for writing AJAX web applications in the Java programming language. A download is available here (make sure you get the latest 1.4 version). Highlights include: The new ImageBundle feature creates a single composite image out of many small ones, which allows dozens of individual HTTP to be consolidated into a single request (more below). 15-20% smaller JavaScript output. Developers can speed up existing Google Web Toolkit apps simply by recompiling with 1.4 RC. An simplified and enhanced startup sequence that removes one HTTP round-trip, reduces the startup script by 80%, and loads modules about 33% faster. Modularized RPC that lets GWT...

NetBeans Rails Support : First Impressions Comments

All ITtoolbox Blogs - May 30, '07 12:19pm
I've been using the Eclipse plugin RadRails for some time for developing Ruby on Rails applications. I've just discovered that the NetBeans IDE from Sun has just had RoR support added, so of course I had to give it a try. These are my first impressions, using NetBeans IDE 6.0 Preview (Milestone 9) on both Linux and Windows. The install went without problems on both Windows and Linux (ran install

Massive network outage for AT&T-SBC Comments

ZDNet Blogs by George Ou - May 30, '07 6:39am
1:00 AM, I'm working late night here in Silicon Valley and the Internet Naming service has gone dark which means I can't get to the Internet.  Not a single DNS server on the AT&T-SBC network functions which tells me it's a bigger issue than just a DNS server problem.  I even fired up my own test Windows Server 2003 virtual machine that has a full fledged DNS server installed and even that wouldn't function.  That means access to the Root DNS servers from the AT&T SBC network is being blocked. 2:30 AM, I finally get through to first tier tech support and they tell me that DNS is down for all of California.  That of course doesn't mean that DNS...

Automating web tests with FitNesse and Selenium Comments

ASP.NET Blogs by RoyOsherove - May 30, '07 6:36am

Here's a nice article details to little known tools in the "mainstream" developer community: Selenium, a browser and web automation framework, and Fitnesse, an acceptance and integration automation solution that uses a Wiki style for managing the tests and data.

To be clear, these are pure integration tests, and not unit tests. They might be using some sort of a unit test framework to do their bidding, but they are testing integrated parts of a full running application, they require configuration of some sort, they take much longer to run, and basically do not meet the the idea of unit tests.

New version of ColdFusion aimed at .NET, Ajax crowd Comments

ZDNet Blogs by Ryan Stewart - May 30, '07 1:37am
The very first language I ever programmed was Quick Basic. The next one was Java in an introduction computer science class. But the first time I ever made real money programming it was building ColdFusion when I worked for Wharton Computing. As a result, ColdFusion has always held a special place in my heart even though it had started to get a bad rap around the web as of late. There was some pickup when Flex 2 came out but the general consensus was that ColdFusion was dying and everyone was just waiting around for the funeral. But today Adobe released a public beta of ColdFusion 8 and based on the early looks I've had, this is very much targeted...
